Thanks for commenting Steven. I wish I was that clever; however, I am just poor at spelling. It is nice to converse with another long time user of Logos. I tried finding those floppies not too long ago, but sadly they are long gone.

I’m pretty sure you mean aesthetic rather than ascetic, but (of course) this might be just post modern wordplay–the importing of “leanness/fasting” into “visually pleasing” would be pretty clever if you actually intend it–my first logos came on the next size down of floppies (was it 31/2) . . . .

There is always a loss of meaning when a text is translated into another language. The problem is not literal verses non-literal, but it is a literary problem. Do we explain the metaphor that is tethered to an ancient culture (and destroy the literary creativity) or do we leave the metaphor in place knowing that the reader will likely miss the wonderful nuance embedded in its language. Regardless of our choices, I believe something will always be missing….or lost in translation.

Does that make sense?

Hi My experience is to translate it as is.Following the catholic model of taking the literal sense first.Then comparing the underlining meaning with related texts of that period and then what the church has to say about the particuar text.This will of course involve the patriarchs of the church.Then I would put in my personal input and related input from modern day conservative views and present it.

Thanks for dropping by and interacting. I am familiar with Buth’s work. He presented some great thoughts at last years National Association of Hebrew Professors meeting at the annual SBL meeting. His material looks great; however, it is a bit too pricey on a student’s budget.

I couldn’t agree more about the necessity of adding an aural component to the process of language acquisition. This is part of the reason I am such a fan of Bonnie Kittel’s Hebrew Grammar.

While we’re on the topic of inductive approaches, I would highly recommend the Living Biblical Hebrew/Greek materials developed by Randall Buth. You begin to hear the spoken languages before ever actually reading them. Hahaha…registering wasn’t really the issue. The problem was the cost of a flight. But wandering halls and filtering into sessions would be hilarious. We will definitely have to catch up at the next meeting.
